The Bengals reportedly decided to let go of veteran quarterback AJ McCarron on Wednesday.
Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Bengals released the former Alabama star after bringing him in as a depth signing following Joe Burrow’s season-ending wrist injury.
McCarron worked his way back into the league with the team that drafted him after a strong showing with the St. Louis Battlehawks where he set the XFL’s single-season passing touchdown record (19), surpassing Tommy Maddox.
When it comes to the NFL, however, McCarron was never quite able to find his footing. The Bengals drafted the two-time national champion in the fifth-round of the 2015 draft where he won two of his three starts his rookie season.
Two years later though he found himself in Oakland with the Raiders before a couple-year stint with the Houston Texans.
In 19 career National Football League games (four starts), McCarron has thrown for 1,192 yards and six touchdowns to three interceptions and completed 63.1% of his passes.
It remains to be seen if the 33-year-old will return to the rebranded UFL but after his success with the Hawks its hard to imagine he won’t always have a football home in St. Louis.
The United Football League opens its 10-week season March 30.
