The Cincinnati Bengals issued their first depth chart of the summer this week ahead of preseason Week 1.
As always, these depth charts are very much unofficial in nature and seem like a mandatory thing the team does out of requirement and/or tradition.
Still, it makes for an interesting look at the roster, so here are three quick takeaways from the chart:
- The starting slot wideout spot currently belongs to Trenton Irwin. And while he’s a roster lock, this is likely more of a veteran nod here than anything. During the season itself, it won’t be a shock to see him fall behind Andrei Iosvias and even rookie Jermaine Burton in snap counts.
- At the second cornerback spot, DJ Turner remains listed over Dax Hill. That’s a carryover from last season for Turner, with Hill a new arrival after changing positions. But given the buzz around Hill’s performance this spring and summer, this one is very much subject to change.
- For now, at least, veteran Trent Brown holds off first-round pick Amarius Mims. But the rookie has been feasting on first-team reps until this Monday, with Brown finally activated and getting into the swing of things. It’s certainly not impossible for Mims to do more with his head start and eventually make this change.
