The Cincinnati Bengals have a franchise quarterback in Joe Burrow – no one will deny that. That being said, Colin Cowherd thinks the team could re-enter the quarterback market sooner than people think.
On the latest edition of Cowherd’s podcast, he suggested that Cincinnati will have to draft a highly-rated quarterback if Burrow suffers another injury.
“I do think one more injury and the Bengals have to draft another quarterback near the first, second, third round,” Cowherd said. “I said this today about Michael Penix: Last year, the Falcons had no good quarterbacks and couldn’t win a bad division. This year, they’ll have the two best quarterbacks, and you’re complaining about it?
“We’re getting to a point with Burrow where it’s a real discussion. You have to have at least a B-backup. I think Burrow is going to have to own it.”
This might seem like an overreaction from Cowherd, but the reality is Burrow has already had two season-ending injuries in his young career.
Burrow suffered a torn ACL during his rookie season in 2020. After being mostly healthy for the next two seasons, he suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist in 2023.
When healthy, Burrow is arguably the second-best quarterback in the NFL behind Patrick Mahomes. For that reason alone, the Bengals will have patience with him.
However, the Bengals can be patient while also adding another talented quarterback to their roster.
