The Cincinnati Bengals’ offense looks a bit different this summer than it did in 2023.
Star wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are back, and thankfully so is quarterback Joe Burrow, who missed nearly half of last season with a wrist injury.
However, Joe Mixon is now in Houston and Tyler Boyd is with the Tennessee Titans. Cincinnati signed tight end Mike Gesicki and running back Zack Moss in free agency, and then added wide receiver Jermaine Burton and tight ends Erick All and Tanner McLachlan in the NFL Draft, altering the makeup of the offensive unit.
The changes might be for the better, Burrow explained recently following one of the team’s minicamp practices.
“With the personnel we have this year, we’ll be able to do a lot more with personnel groupings,” Burrow said, via the team’s website. “Putting different people in different spots … And doing a lot of different things as far as eye candy and making teams adjust their personnel based on ours.”
The Bengals also have a new offensive coordinator, with Dan Pitcher promoted from quarterbacks coach to replace Brian Callahan. Head coach Zac Taylor will still handle play-calling duties.
Despite Burrow’s injury, the Bengals still managed a winning season in 2023, though their 9-8 mark left them in last place in the ultra-competitive AFC North.
If the revamped offense meshes early this fall, a return to Super Bowl contention is a possibility.
