The NFL is going to an 18-game regular season. It’s a matter of when, not if.
When the league eventually adds a game to each team’s schedule, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has an idea for how they can adjust to make things work.
During an appearance on “Pardon My Take,” Burrow advocated for two bye weeks, including one universal one for the entire NFL.
“He suggests one of the byes should be around Week 13 for the entire NFL, with Pro Bowl festivities that week, similar to the NBA’s All-Star weekend. Burrow believes this would boost ratings for the struggling Pro Bowl,” said the 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov. “Additionally, by adding a second bye week and an extra game, the Super Bowl would fall on the Sunday before Presidents Day, giving most of the country a day off after the biggest game of the year.”
For the most part, the NFL world has been receptive to Burrow’s suggestions, at least on social media.
“Burreaux for commish,” said Brad Spielberger of Grand Central Sports Management.
“Is it too late to put Burrow in the 2024 Presidential race?” asked PFF’s Sam Monson.
“Great plan,” added Indianapolis Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin, adding in some fire emojis for effect.
“Burrow has been the most outspoken player when it comes to the move to 18 games, but he’s focusing on all the wrong things,” argued one fan. “Stop fixating on scheduling and bye weeks (these should be givens) and start speaking up for something more impactful.”
“They pay Roger Goodell $64 million/year to come up with stuff like this,” another person added.
The NFL’s current CBA expires in March 2031, meaning the earliest we’d likely get a 18-game slate would be that fall.
Assuming Burrow is still playing at that point, it will be interesting if the league uses the format he proposes.
