The shorthanded Cats couldn’t pull this one out.
The Kentucky Wildcats hobbled into Saturday night’s battle with the Texas Longhorns. Both teams were operating with a limited roster. Expectations for a road win in Austin lessened after the news broke that both Lamont Butler and Jason Robinson would be unavailable.
In the face of adversity, Mark Pope would call on Travis Perry to start his first-ever game as a Wildcat.
UK would get out to a hot start that included a Perry 3-ball. Overall, it played a solid first half of basketball. Travis Perry and Trent Noah would play a combined 24 mins, contributing on both ends of the floor.
However, it was UK’s Amari Williams who stole the show in the first half, scoring nine points, grabbing five boards, and draining his first 3-pointer as a Wildcat.
Despite shooting just 3/13 from deep, Kentucky would take an impressive 41-37 lead heading into the locker room. The rest of the game would prove to be a war, with each team stealing momentum for mini-stretches.
Kentucky would lean on their do-it-all big man Amari Williams early and often. The warrior in the middle of would lead UK in a tenacious effort while willing positive outcomes for his team.
However, led by Tre Johnson, Texas would scrape and claw their way to a four-point lead in with 90 seconds left to play.
A missed Koby Brea 3-pointer and made Tre Johnson jump shot for the Longhorns ended any chance at getting out of Austin with a win.
Texas takes advantage of 15 UK turnovers and wins 82-78. It was a gutsy effort by an undermanned Kentucky team, but now sitting at 6-6 in the conference, there isn’t much time for moral victories.
Box Score

MVP
Amari Williams remains a force in the middle and one of the most difficult players in the SEC to game plan for. What he lacks in finesse, Williams more than makes up for it with pure effort and determination.
With all of UK’s injuries woes, it’s hard to imagine this team without the contributions of Amari Williams on offense and defense. He’s been nothing short of incredible for many games this season, and tonight in Austin, #22 had another great outing.
He’d finish the game with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Mark Pope tells the UK Sports Network’s Tom Leach that former Lyon County star Travis Perry will start at point guard tonight for Kentucky.
“He’s fully capable. He’s unbelievably confident. He’s ready,” Pope says of Perry.

Kentucky is 1-9 from 3. That needs to improve quickly.

Collin Chandler seems like a great teammate and has great potential. But there’s no reason to have him in the game tonight. He’s just not an offensive threat like Trent Noah or Travis Perry.

Given the context, Amari Williams is the single most valuable player in the entire SEC right now

Heck of a half by Kentucky!!!
Scoring 41 points, without your 2nd and 3rd leading scorers, on the road at a Quad 1A opponent (let that context sink in) is pretty darn awesome.
15 points on 14 shots for #20 Johnson. Even if he scores 30, if it takes 28 shots, the ‘Cats will win.

Otega Oweh gets to double figures again in Austin, extending his streak to 25 games — every single one as a Wildcat

Amari Williams has attempted three threes this year with Kentucky scoring 8 points as a result.
It might be Kentucky’s most efficient offensive play.

Everybody worried about freshmen holding up at Texas and rightfully so. But it’s veterans Oweh and Brea who gotta play better in last 8 minutes.

Wow! Fundamentals Kentucky. Block out on the free throw line.

Without two key players, we just refused to do the little things tonight. No boxing out, no help defense, a lot of standing around. This game was there for the taking.

It is easy to say “we win this game with either Robinson or Butler,” but we are Kentucky Basketball.
You had a 70-67 lead, and then allowed 9 unanswered points. You cannot do that.

Everyone standing around watching. A theme too often on rebounds. Pissed it away down the stretch
— Shaun Dunn (@Dunn30) February 16, 2025
Losing this short-handed isn’t a big deal, but UK had every opportunity in this game. Every time we had a chance to push the lead we had 2-3 plays of stupid shit in a row. Calls were bad, but that ain’t the reason you lost
— Seth (@Setty_T4) February 16, 2025
Missed free throws and that awful entry pass are going to loss the Cats this game.
— Ethan DeWitt (@EthanDeWitt1) February 16, 2025
The annoying thing is, we beat this team by 15 if we even have one of Lamont or Robinson. Unfortunate.

I’ll say it again and then quit prefacing with it…but expecting a team to win a Quad 1A road game without their second leading scorer, third leading scorer, and backup point guard is SILLY.
However, Kentucky found a way to be in a position to win. You have to close it out.
— Brandon Ramsey (@BRamseyKSR) February 16, 2025
Tre Johnson (32) and Tramon Mark (26) combined for 58 of Texas’ 82 points.

A lot to be unhappy about from Kentucky’s loss tonight.
Up 5, under four minutes left, you gotta find a way to win that game.
That said, Kentucky is down to their fourth option at point guard. A lot is being asked from a depleted roster.
