After cutting down the final nets for the second year in a row, there’s no denying that UConn head coach Dan Hurley is the most successful coach in college basketball today. But with Kentucky now looking for a new head coach, the opportunity to get a new challenge and potentially a bigger payday has to be appealing, right?
Apparently not. Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, Hurley was asked about the rumors that the Wildcats will be pursuing him as a replacement for John Calipari in the days to come.
Hurley said that he couldn’t receive any calls or messages on Saturday when the news first broke, so he had no idea what was going on when he was first asked about the matter. But he made it clear that all he cares about is UConn and the goal of creating a “dynasty” in Connecticut.
“My phone broke on Saturday so I couldn’t receive any calls or text messages… I had no idea what was going on with Kentucky and then I got those questions after the game… UConn is my only mindset and we’re hopefully going for a dynasty,” Hurley said.
Hurley is currently making an estimated $5 million per year with the Huskies. A good number of SEC and Big Ten schools – specifically, the blue bloods – would conceivably be able to pay him more.
But it’s clear that a pay raise isn’t his priority right now.
Will Dan Hurley coach the rest of his career at UConn, or will he eventually coach another team?
