UConn head coach Dan Hurley is considered the top target for Kentucky, but is he actually willing to listen to the program’s offer.
Hurley appeared on “The Herd” this Wednesday to discuss his second national title at UConn. While on FS1, he was asked about Kentucky’s reported interest in him.
Colin Cowherd basically suggested that Kentucky is willing to double Hurley’s salary in order to hire him.
“You feel like UConn, but you don’t want schools to take advantage of that,” Cowherd told Hurley. “You’ve got a big market if you want to leave. What happens if somebody brings up a brinks truck and you have to go to your boss and say ‘okay, they gave me a zillion dollars.’ Where are you on that?”
Hurley didn’t completely dismiss the idea of coaching Kentucky, but he did sound like a coach who wants to remain at UConn.
“It’s flattering. I’ve come a long way since being a high school coach 15 years ago, and had to kind of work my way up the ladder in the business as a coach the way coaches did it back a long time ago,” Hurley replied. “You know, it’s certainly flattering, but I’ve got a long career of turning down jobs or more money to stay in places that I was happy and that fit me and that provide me the resources to, at that level, achieve the things you want to achieve. Right now at UConn, what the place means to us, the opportunity to go for a three-peat is the only thing on anyone’s mind here.”
We can’t fault Kentucky if it throws a ridiculous offer at Hurley. We also can’t blame him if he turns it down.
Since taking over in 2018, Hurley has a 141-58 record at UConn. What he has accomplished over the past two years is truly special.
