Fox was traded from Sacramento to San Antonio in the middle of the season.
The San Antonio Spurs have one of the most exciting young rosters, and they continued to build that out with the addition of Kings guard De’Aaron Fox prior to the 2025 NBA Trade Deadline.
Fox, who recently dropped 32 points in 41 minutes on the Dallas Mavericks Wednesday, will undergo season-ending finger surgery, a brutal blow for the Spurs. ESPN’s Shams Charania was among the first to report the breaking news.
Fox was averaging 25 points per game with the Kings and saw that dip to 19.7 per game with the Spurs. He played 17 games with San Antonio this season.
While the Spurs have a talented roster, their championship hopes took a major slashing when former No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the season earlier in the year, so Fox’s injury is just another significant hurdle they will have to overcome.

The Spurs, who were in the playoff race earlier in the season, are now just 27-38 after going 3-7 in their last 10 games. They have fallen behind the ball and will likely be looking toward the 2025-26 season moving forward, as their top two weapons will be on the sideline for the remainder of the season.
Looking into next year, especially with what should be a top-10 pick, the Spurs will have what it takes not just to make the playoffs but to contend for a title. As for Fox, he is coming off a career-best 26.6 points per game in the 2023-2024 season, so the 27-year-old might be looking to at least hit that peak again next year.
