Vitale is a big fan of Pope.
Kentucky basketball is in a good position for the long-term future. Mark Pope seems like the real deal, and the Wildcats’ mix of young, up-and-coming players, along with veteran transfers, has aided the team throughout the season.
Had you told many fans that before the season or at the exodus of former long-time head coach John Calipari, they might not have believed you. However, the truth is that what’s happening in Lexington is sustainable.
One person that is noticing that is Dick Vitale, who seems to be a fan of Pope. The two recently posed for a photo, an iconic one.

Let’s just say his praise didn’t just stop there. He took to Twitter to discuss his view on this Kentucky team. Thankfully, Vitale realized that playing without the crux of your offense isn’t easy and complimented how the Cats performed on the road against the Crimson Tide.
After seeing the @KentuckyMBB in person vs the talented @AlabamaMBB team I’m impressed by what @CoachMarkPope has done .
With the return of Lamont Butler & Jaxson Robinson BBN will be a legit threat @MarchMadnessMBB time .Playing in the @SEC w/o ur starting guards is TOUGH!— Dick Vitale (@DickieV) February 23, 2025
With wins over teams like Tennessee (twice), Duke, and Gonzaga, the Cats do appear like the real deal, and a deep run in March Madness should solidify Pope among the best coaches in college hoops.
A former big man himself, Pope has unlocked the true potential of players like Amari Williams and Andrew Carr. Expect a fully healthy Cats team to be a dangerous weapon in about a month, as conference tournament play will start in just a handful of weeks.
