Despite receiving interest from Kentucky this week, Scott Drew has decided to stay at Baylor for the 2024-25 season.
Drew was considered Kentucky’s top target after losing John Calipari to Arkansas. He actually spoke with the university’s athletic department about potentially taking his talents to Lexington.
Many people assumed Drew would eventually sign with Kentucky because it’s considered one of the premier jobs in the country. It’s also worth noting that he has a close relationship with Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart.
When the dust settled, Drew came to the conclusion that he’s not ready to leave Baylor.
Basketball fans around the country can’t believe that Drew turned down interest from Kentucky.
“Wow,” one person replied to this news. “Outstanding decision.”
Another person said, “Wow. Seemed like UK fans were convinced they had Drew locked up. Will be interesting to see where Kentucky turns now.”
“There’s something so satisfying about fans of these blue blood programs thinking they can just get any coach they want and then when the time comes to actually hire somebody they absolutely cannot,” a fan wrote.
Drew, 53, has been coaching at Baylor since 2003. He led the Bears to a national championship in 2021.
Baylor hasn’t made it past the Round of 32 since winning a national title, but the future will remain bright as long as Drew is still at the helm.
As for Kentucky, it must go back to the drawing board to figure out who’ll replace Calipari.
