The Kentucky community received unfortunate news this week. George Atkins, who played for the Wildcats from 1960-1963, has passed away at the age of 82.
Atkins played for Adolph Rupp during his time in Lexington. He was on two separate teams that made it to the Elite Eight.
On Thursday morning, Kentucky released a brief statement on Atkins.
“Sending condolences to the family and friends of George Atkins, a member of the 1960-63 teams and past president of the UK Alumni Association,” the school said.
After his basketball career came to an end, Atkins got involved in politics. In 1972, he became the mayor of Hopkinsville.
Three years later, Atkins was elected state auditor. He ran for governor in 1979 before withdrawing from the race and becoming the finance secretary and cabinet secretary of the eventual winner, John Y. Brown Jr.
Throughout his pursuit of a career in politics, Atkins showed support for the UK Alumni Association.
Atkins had his memorial service last week in Louisville. A service was also held in Hopkinsville that same week.
Our thoughts are with Atkins’ loved ones.
