“I was ready to roll.” Yeah…
There are not many positives to take away from the Kentucky Wildcats‘ last few weeks, as the Cats were crushed by the Auburn Tigers on Saturday night.
In what started off looking like it could be a promising night for the offense, that narrative completely shifted once the start of the second quarter hit. That led to the staff deciding they wanted to hand the ball over to Gavin Wimsatt in the second half.
“(We) just wanted to get a good look at Gavin and see if he can help us move the ball,” Mark Stoops said in his post-game press conference.
Hamdan added this about Wimsatt in his postgame interviews:
“We’ve always thought his combination of size and speed and athleticism…wanted to see if that was going to provide a spark for us. We’re at that point right now where we felt we needed to do something.”
In came Wimsatt, and out came Brock Vandagriff, and it sounds like both Wimsatt was ‘‘ready to roll” while also complementing the Georgia transfer QB:
“It was part of the plan. At halftime, we went in, and they just said they were going to go with me,” Wimsatt said in the postgame interviews. “I was ready to roll. Brock is a great guy, selfless, and he’s for whatever’s best for the team. And me, as well — whether that’s coming in or going out.”
However, the spark never came. Wimsatt showed some flashes but also struggled to get the offense moving at any point in the second half.
With four games remaining, who knows what the future holds? Will Stoops and Hamdan decide to keep rolling with Vandagriff or turn to Wimsatt?
If they do decide to go with the Owensboro native, he knows he needs to fix some things.
“I would say there are definitely some things I can do better, such as operating and whatnot. I just have to go into film and really see,” said Wimsatt.
The BBN is in an interesting place with this program. Unfortunately, a trip to Tennessee on deck doesn’t make it any easier.
