The Cats rebound in a major way against an NCAA Tournament contender.
The Kentucky Wildcats returned to Rupp Arena tonight for a date with the Vanderbilt Commodores as they looked to get back in the win column. They did just that as they raced past the Commodores with a final score of 82-61.
To start the first half, the Cats were on fire, hitting what felt like every shot they put up. Unfortunately, the defense couldn’t stop Vanderbilt at all, regressing back to a unit that was plain rough to watch earlier on in the season.
If it wasn’t for the outburst of scoring from Otega Oweh, Amari Williams, and Collin Chandler, this game could have gotten quite ugly. Luckily, those three did erupt for some offense, allowing the Cats to take a 41-40 lead into the half.
Coming out of the locker room, however, this Kentucky team looked like a whole new squad. With some stops piling up on the defensive end, alongside some solid offensive sets, the Cats finally started clicking eventually pulling away from the Commodores.
It was a must-win game for Kentucky, and they showed up and did just that. Now, they will turn their attention to a big opportunity in Tuscaloosa this Saturday as they look to add another top-five win to their resume.
But tonight, let’s celebrate!

Game MVP
Otega Oweh dominated Vanderbilt tonight.
He finished with 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting and 1-for-2 from three. He also added seven rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block.
Oweh has continued to be one of the more impressive players in the SEC, and tonight he showed he can do it from all three levels. If he can continue on this trend, when Robinson and Butler return, the Kentucky offense could be legit heading into March.
We also need to give a huge shout-out to Collin Chandler for his play tonight, as he was impressive on both ends of the floor. If he can continue to rise, it just adds another option for this staff going forward.

Not surprisingly, Kentucky was leading with Amari Williams in the game. Not surprisingly, they have lost the lead with him out.

41-21 would be a mighty impressive half for a fully healthy Kentucky team against any SEC team.

.@KentuckyMBB improves to 10-0 on the season when @kobybrea makes at least 3 3-pointers

Kentucky turned it over on 19.4% of possessions and allowed Vanderbilt to offensive rebound 28.2% of their misses (not terrible, but not good enough).
However, 11-27 shooting from deep and PERFECT 13-13 shooting from the free throw line was the difference.
Also forced 10 TO’s!

Kentucky continuing to show signs of life on the defensive end. Just held Vanderbilt to 21 second-half points in a 21-point win. Third time in four games they’ve limited an opponent to fewer than 65 points and to one point per possession or below. Alabama awaits on Saturday …

We saw a really good version of Kentucky before injuries but the best is still coming. The experience the freshmen have gained makes Kentucky a better team at full strength. Mark Pope has a deep roster of guys he will feel confident in. Just get healthy.
