Kentucky is in the mix for the talented freshman.
The Kentucky Wildcats have a new target to monitor within the transfer portal, and it’s someone they recently faced.
That would be Illinois freshman forward Morez Johnson, one of the more promising young players currently in the portal.
According to college basketball reporter Jon Rothstein, Kentucky is among the six finalists for Johnson, joining the likes of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Kansas Jayhawks, Michigan Wolverines, Tennessee Volunteers, and Arkansas Razorbacks.
Originally a 4-star class of 2024 recruit, Johnson was ranked 31st nationally and sixth among centers in his class. The 6-foot-9, 225-pound Illinois native went on to average 7.0 points on 64.2% shooting, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks in 17.7 minutes per game.
Against Kentucky in the Round of 32, Johnson went for five points on 2/4 shooting, seven rebounds, and one steal in 17 minutes. He was really starting to blossom in the middle of Big Ten play before a broken wrist sidelined him for nearly a month. He failed to reach double figures in the four games he played in after his return from injury.
According to KenPom, Johnson primarily played at the 5 spot while occasionally logging minutes at the 4.
One to watch for.
