This morning served as our first full dose of Kentucky spring football. Before today, we only knew what the coaches were telling us. If you’ve learned anything about Mark Stoops over the years, it’s the many times it is not that insightful.
The Kentucky head coach was kind enough to open up practice for the media. We shared updates all morning on KSBoard and some takeaways after practice. Fortunately, we’re able to share a little bit of what we saw. Steven Peake had the camera rolling to capture some of the drills the players were participating in, as well as some live team periods.
You’ll see Cutter Boley spin it to a few pass-catchers during a tempo period. Unfortunately, the wind wasn’t very helpful. It doesn’t sound great, but more importantly, it caught a bunch of deep balls and sent them 10 yards past their intended targets. Cole Lanter made quite a few contested catches.
The most impressive plays of the day were during a period that could not be shot on film. Freshman DJ Miller made an outstanding catch over the top of a defender during a team period. On the first play of that period, Kendrick Law got loose for a gain of 35+ yards.
You will get to see one of Kentucky’s most prolific transfer portal additions make a big play. Mi’Quise Humphrey-Grace beat his blocker to the edge of an outside zone play, then stripped the ball carrier. That’s big-time.
Hear from the Players after Spring Practice
Once practice wrapped up, three Wildcats talked about the first 10 practices of the season. Zach Calzada talked about the chemistry he’s creating with his pass-catchers. It’s not always seamless. They’re learning through mistakes. In one instance today, Willie Rodriguez thought Calzada was tucking the ball and running. As soon as the tight end started to block, Calzada tried to flip him the football. It’s all a part of the learning process.
Rodriguez spent some time chatting with the media before Jager Burton took the podium. The veteran offensive lineman is trying his hand at center once again. He admitted that his confidence was shaky at times in the past and shared how he’s overcome it ahead of a pivotal final season at Kentucky.
