The transfer portal is a weird place. You never know what is going to happen. That’s especially the case for Magoon Gwath.
The 7-footer was an unranked recruit who became the Mountain West Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference with 2.6 blocks per game. The meteoric rise made him a hot commodity when he announced he would test the waters of free agency and enter the transfer portal.
After a couple of days, Kentucky and Michigan emerged as the two top choices for Magoon Gwath. Early on Tuesday, multiple predictions rolled in for the Wildcats to secure his services. That’s when the shocking news arrived late Tuesday night.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Magoon Gwath will return to San Diego State. It’s such a surprise that the author had to write in the lede: “This is not an April Fools’ joke.”
Mark Zeigler reports that despite interest from some of the biggest names in college basketball, he was having second thoughts about leading the Aztecs’ program. Brian Dutcher gave him a chance as an unheralded player and he wanted to follow through for his head coach.
“I knew he wanted to be here with us and knew in his heart that he wanted to be at San Diego State, but he owed it to himself and to his family to see what was out there,” Dutcher said Tuesday night.
“At the end of the day, he was willing to settle for less money. It’s not all about money, as much as people want to say it is. Money is important, of course, but if money was the end-all, be-all, we wouldn’t have a team right now.”
The surprising decision takes another frontcourt player off of the Kentucky Big Board. Earlier Tuesday, Morez Johnson announced he will be transferring from Illinois to Michigan. The Cats have plenty of other targets out there, most notably UAB’s Yaxel Lindeborg, who Mark Pope visited in-person on the day he entered the transfer portal.
