LEXINGTON, Ky. – In a game that saw three penalty kicks, three goals, and a red card, Kentucky women’s soccer (10-1-3, 2-1-3) defeated LSU (7-6-1, 2-4-0) 2-1 in a thrilling return to the Bell Soccer Complex for the first time since late September.
A late goal in the 85th minute from freshman Alexis Tylenda handed Kentucky all three points on the evening as the Cats won their 10th game of the season, the first time that tally has been met since 2014. It also marks the most wins so far in the Troy Fabiano era.
The Wildcats outshot the Tigers 13-8 on the night with six shots on goal to LSU’s five. Each goalkeeper had four saves while the Tigers picked up four yellow and one red card in the 77th minute.
The first half of the match was eventful as Kentucky got off to a fast start scoring in the third minute of play through Makala Woods, her seventh goal of the season. Maddie Kemp found the in-form striker sitting behind the halfway line who timed her run perfectly to stay onside. Kemp lofted a ball over the top of the LSU defense where Woods slotted home for the 1-0 lead beating goalkeeper Audur Scheving. The goal also marks Kemp’s second assist of the season.
LSU was gifted an opportunity to tie the game after being awarded a spot kick in the 19th minute after a controversial handball call on Grace Hoytink inside the area. Tiger Sage Glover took the attempt which was seen denied by Marz Josephson to maintain the 1-0 lead.
Moments later, Kentucky were granted an attempt from the penalty spot in the 36th minute after a foul in the box. Kemp stepped up to take the kick, putting it low and into Scheving’s awaiting arms. The Wildcats finished the half taking a 1-0 advantage into the break.
The second half was a battle as Kentucky knocked on the door for the second goal. It wasn’t meant to be however as the Tigers earned their second penalty kick of the game in the 73rd minute after a foul in the box on Sophia Mattice. This time, Ava Amsden took the attempt and slotted it home to tie the game at 1-1.
With the game tied, the Wildcats were urgent to find the winner and after a few attempts, they finally did in the 85th minute. Grace Phillpotts played a ball into the box that was touched ahead by Kemp landing at the feet of Tylenda on the far side of the box. Tylenda side-footed the shot into the upper corner of the net for the winning goal in an unforgettable moment of the season. It marks her third goal, Phillpotts’ fourth assist, and Kemp’s third assist of the season.
The Wildcats will head down I-65 to Nashville this weekend for a test against Vanderbilt (5-2-5, 0-2-3) on Sunday, October 13th. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast on SEC Network.
