LEXINGTON, Ky. – Logan Salow’s return to his alma mater has been a fruitful one as he was promoted to Director of Scouting and Analytics by Kentucky head coach Nick Mingione this offseason.
Director of Operations Brock Doud also has been promoted to Chief of Staff.
Salow, an Ashland, Kentucky native who returned to the program last season after a professional career will help keep Kentucky on the forefront of the analytical data and information space.
Salow turned in a career year for Kentucky in 2017, Mingione’s first in Lexington, and was rewarded when the Oakland Athletics selected him in the sixth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft. The left-handed closer was taken with the 171st overall pick.
Salow, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior, was lights out that season, recording 12 saves with a 1.95 earned run average in 31 appearances. He gave up just 37 hits and struck out 73 in 55.1 innings as opposing batters hit just .188 against him. The 12 saves tied Trevor Gott (2013) for the most in a season at UK.
Salow settled into the Cats’ closer role as a senior but his versatility throughout his career made him one of the most valuable pitchers to come through the program in a long time. Salow also was the SEC Pitcher of the Week for March 27, 2017 after saving all three of Kentucky’s victories the previous week. As part of that stretch, Salow did not allow a baserunner in 10.0 innings pitched. He retired 30 consecutive hitters – 19 coming via strikeout – and earned five saves in that time over that period of dominance.
The gritty southpaw finished his career second on the UK career saves list (16), third in appearances (94), eighth in hits per nine innings (7.75) and 11th in ERA (3.40).
He opened his pro career in the Oakland organization before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers where he made it to Triple-A before injuries derailed his promising career. He pitched in parts of five seasons, going 14-7 with a 2.76 earned run average and 10 saves in 141 appearances. He struck out 245 in 186 innings and held opponents to a .191 average.
The Cats are entering their ninth season under head coach Nick Mingione and have won 262 games during his tenure, including last season’s school-record 46-win campaign that featured a SEC regular season championship and Mingione’s second National Coach of the Year honor in seven full seasons at the helm.
