Kentucky misses out on the talented transfer.
The Kentucky Wildcats continue to fill out next season’s roster, but it won’t include San Diego State transfer Magoon Gwath.
The 7-foot, 190-pound forward has opted to remain with the Aztecs, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. This comes after multiple recruiting predictions were logged in favor of Kentucky.
Gwath, who started all 26 games he played in as a freshman at San Diego State, averaged 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and an impressive 2.6 blocks per game while logging 24.9 minutes per contest. His defensive presence and shot-blocking ability could have been a major asset for Kentucky as they work to replace the production of Andrew Carr, Amari Williams, and Ansley Almonor, all of whom are graduating after this season.
While Gwath has plenty of upside, there are a couple of key concerns. Injuries have been an issue, as he missed the entire 2023-24 season due to a foot injury and was forced to redshirt.
Additionally, he missed five games during the 2024-25 campaign after suffering a hyperextended knee. Staying healthy will be crucial if he hopes to make an impact next year.
Another area of focus will be his weight and strength. At just 190 pounds, he will need to add size and muscle to handle the physicality of high-level basketball, where interior battles can be grueling.
Interestingly, Gwath has a prior connection to Kentucky’s Lamont Butler, as the two were teammates at San Diego State during Butler’s final year before he transferred to Kentucky. It’s possible Butler played a role in recruiting Gwath, but alas, it didn’t work out.
With more roster spots to fill, the Wildcats will remain active in the transfer portal as they look to reload and compete for a deep postseason run in the 2025-26 season.
