The football and basketball Cats are in action this week.
Kentucky Wildcats basketball and football will both have regular season games in the same week for the first time this year as Mark Pope’s team takes on the Duke Blue Devils on Tuesday night in Atlanta while Mark Stoops and company host the Murray State Racers on Saturday at Kroger Field.
Pope’s Wildcats have started the season 2-0 with wins over Wright State and Bucknell, scoring at least 100 points in both contests. The team’s offense has been crisp with a high assist rate on made field goals and terrific efficiency shooting the basketball — both overall as well as from 3-point range.
Their first “test” of the season will indeed come Tuesday as the No. 23 Wildcats find themselves to be 6.5-point underdogs to No. 7 Duke.
Kentucky’s depth has appeared to be something special, but will they have the right matchup to go against star freshman Cooper Flagg? It may take a multitude of defensive assignments with the hope of disrupting Flagg’s rhythm and, therefore, further interrupting the flow of Duke’s offense.
Pope’s Wildcats will have to do that in conjunction with running their own offense, focusing on what they do best—ball movement and playing a true team game.
Stoops and the Kentucky football team are winding down their regular season as they have just a few games left on the schedule. Entering the week 3-6, the Wildcats are significant home favorites over Murray State.
ESPN’s Football Power Index is giving Kentucky (despite their disappointing record this fall) a 99% chance to win on Saturday — which is the highest percentage they’ve seen going into a game this season.
Kentucky football will wrap up the year with a road game at No. 5 Texas before returning home for the Governor’s Cup against No. 22 Louisville.
