Reed Sheppard is surprised at how everything has happened over the last year.
Sheppard came to Kentucky as a freshman in the 2023 class and had one heck of a season in 2023-24, averaging 12.5 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game.
He averaged more playing time than any other first-year player on the team, allowing him to excel. He’s now on the cusp of being drafted in the 2024 NBA Draft, which has surprised him.
According to former head coach John Calipari, Sheppard thought he would be with Kentucky for a little longer than just one season.
“I asked him after the season, ‘How much did you expect to play?’ He said, ‘Ah, I thought I’d be carrying water.’ Did you expect to leave here after the season? He said, ‘Coach, I expected to be here all four years,'” Calipari said, (first transcribed by On3).
In addition to averaging 12.5 points per game, Sheppard was named SEC Freshman of the Year.
Right now, he’s projected to be a top-10 pick in the NBA Draft but could be picked a bit higher if he gets more buzz.
The 2024 NBA Draft will be held from Jun. 26-27.
