If you’re a Kentucky basketball fan feverishly hitting refresh on your favorite sports news app, you can put the phone down for the rest of the night.
According to Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio, the official announcement for the University of Kentucky’s new head basketball coach is not expected to come tonight. Per the report, the team has not made an official offer and still has “three major candidates” but has only managed to contact two of their three.
“Things can always change obviously, but I don’t expect any type of announcement or major movement on the UK Head Coaching search tonight,” Jones wrote on Wednesday afternoon. “There still hasn’t been an official offer and there are still three major candidates. UK has been in contact with two of the three today but that’s it.”
Baylor head coach Scott Drew is believed to be among the three candidates for the position. Drew won a national title with the Bears in 2021 and is a three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year.
The other two head coaches being eyed are Dan Hurley of the UConn Huskies and Billy Donovan of the Chicago Bulls. Hurley just led the Huskies to their second straight national title while Donovan has been out of college since 2015 but led Florida to back-to-back national titles in 2006 and 2007.
Will the Wildcats hire their next head coach by the end of the week? Will they have at least narrowed it down to one or two by then?
