John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats are in the middle of a tough losing skid and things may only get tougher, according to Gary Parrish of CBS Sports.
Per the college basketball reporter, the two sides are in a “broken marriage” but Calipari’s huge salary is what’s keeping them from going their separate ways.
It’s uncomfortable. … I don’t think John could find another job where he is making this kind of money. So he’s going to keep this one, and I don’t know that Kentucky can afford — and I know they can — but it’s a lot of money to move on from John Calipari. So they’re just sort of stuck.
Adds Parrish:
It’s not close from a talent perspective and they’re just an OK team. They’re 5-5 in the first 2 quadrants with a loss at home to UNC-Wilmington. They’re good, but they’re not anything other than good. … If they bomb out in the NCAA Tournament, it could just get so ugly where Kentucky would say, ‘Even if this costs us 10s of millions of dollars, we’ve got to do it.’
Fans in Lexington have begun to grow tired of the program underachieving given its five-star talent year-after-year. The 15-6 Wildcats will try to get back in the win column in tonight’s game vs. Vandy at 8:30 PM ET.
