What was once reported by anonymous sources has now been publicly made clear as Baylor men’s basketball coach Scott Drew formally announces that he will not be the new head coach of the University of Kentucky.
In a statement released on Thursday, Drew made it clear that he is staying at Baylor in hopes of “working together to bring more championships to Waco.”
“In our program, we strive to put Jesus first, then others, then ourselves. We truly believe God has called my family and I to continue our work here at Baylor, surrounded by the best people and community anyone could be blessed to have. We are grateful for the support of (Baylor athletic director) Mack Rhodes, President (Linda) Livingstone and the entire Baylor Family, and we look forward to working together to bring more championships to Waco. #JOY,” Drew said, via Jon Rothstein.
Drew won a national title with Baylor in 2021 and has been at the helm for every NCAA Tournament win that the program has enjoyed in the seeded era. He’s a proven winner at a school that has been competing with a number of historically great programs within the Big 12 Conference.
It’s a relief for Baylor but a likely source of anxiety for the Kentucky Wildcats. Drew’s decision to stay in Waco limits the number of available top coaches for them to give offers to.
There are very few coaches who won national titles that are still coaching and even fewer that are available right now.
Will Scott Drew win another national title with the Bears?
