Texas and Georgia are currently on a collision course.
Greetings, BBN!
We’re down to just three teams still touting a 0-0 conference record, and all of them are in SEC action this weekend. Ole Miss is hosting Kentucky, Texas is making its SEC debut in one of the gentlest ways possible by hosting 1-3 Mississippi State, and Alabama is hosting none other than the Georgia Bulldogs.
Last week, Arkansas joined the 1-0 club with an extremely important win on the road against Auburn, where they used a double-digit win in Jordan-Hare to dramatically increase their confidence, bowl hopes, and Coach Pittman’s job security. Tennessee also impressed on the road in Norman, OK, where they spoiled the Sooners’ SEC debut. Not everyone impressed, though—Missouri barely escaped cosmic disaster at home against spunky Vanderbilt, and Mississippi State placed a down payment on the league basement, office #16.
Here’s the full standings breakdown entering Week 5:
SEC Standings Week 5:
Notes:
- Ole Miss has now outscored its opponents 220-22 in four games.
- Not a single SEC team will play both Oklahoma and Texas this season. In a pretty smooth scheduling arrangement, the league gave Texas seven teams to play, plus Oklahoma, and gave Oklahoma seven teams to play, plus Texas. That also means every SEC team will play at least one of them.
- Vanderbilt pushed Missouri to 2OT in Columbia but missed a field goal that would’ve brought it to 3OT. One of their most impressive SEC performances in recent years, but came up a little short.
- Kentucky is 9-9 in field goals this season.
- Oklahoma will have to adjust to the new league fast. Next up are at Auburn, Texas, South Carolina, and Ole Miss. While not probable, it is possible they could start league play 0-5. Or at least 1-4. Watch out.
- If Texas and Georgia keep winning, we’ll have a #1 vs #2 showdown in Austin on October 19th.
