Sunday Headlines: Malachi Moreno wins Sweet 16 Edition

The future Wildcat led his team to the state championship yesterday

Future Kentucky Wildcats big man Malachi Moreno had a big day yesterday, leading his Great Crossing team to the state championship in Rupp Arena.

Moreno came up big for his team in the championship game, finishing with 24 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks as Great Crossing defeated Bowling Green 71-61. Moreno was also named Tournament MVP.

The championship caps off a big season for Moreno, who was also named Kentucky Mr. Basketball while averaging 21 points and 15 rebounds per game.

This is the second consecutive year a future Wildcat has led his team to the state championship in his senior season, with Travis Perry doing it last year.

While the high school season is completed now, it won’t be too much longer before Moreno is back on the floor. He’s slated to play in the McDonald’s All-American game on Tuesday.

Moreno joins the likes of Reed Sheppard, Rajon Rondo, Winston Bennett, Rex Chapman, and Dirk Minniefield to be born in Kentucky and named a McDonald’s All-American before coming to UK.
