Another year, another dominant season for Oscar Tshiebwe in the G League. The former Kentucky Wildcat and forever rebounding savant again put up monster numbers. Freshly added to the Salt Lake City Jazz this season, he not only led the G League in rebounding with 19 per game, but this mark also set the all-time G League single-season rebounding record.
Tshiebwe surpassed second-place Moses Brown by more than two boards per contest, but it gets better. In any other year, Brown’s 16.6 rebounds per game would have set the record for the most rebounds in a single season, but doing so in the same year Oscar went off, he is now in a distant second.
In addition to his usual glass ownership, Tshiebwe also averaged 17.1 points, 2.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game. It all led to All-NBA G League First Team honors for the second straight year.
Oscar hasn’t yet exerted the same level of dominance at the NBA level, but he did make his presence felt for the Utah Jazz in their last few games of the season. Tshiebwe had a career-high 18 points in Utah’s final regular-season game on 7-8 shooting. And because Oscar is Oscar, he also grabbed 12 rebounds. It was a nice cap to back-to-back-to-back double-doubles for Big O, as he averaged 15 points and 13 rebounds in just under 23 minutes in his final three games.
The Pacers traded Tshiebwe to the Jazz during the offseason, where he signed a two-way contract. He is now a restricted free agent, so let’s hope either the Jazz or another team appreciates the uncanny skillset Big O brings to the table and we see him setting more rebounding records for years to come.
