The spring transfer portal window officially opened on Wednesday. We did not have to wait long to see Kentucky add to the 2025 roster. We’ve seen some player movement and are expecting more over the next few days. Teams are working rapidly to get targets on campus for visits over the next few weeks to close these fast-paced recruitments.
Kentucky scored a second transfer portal recruiting win on Tuesday after Hardley Gilmore IV got the day started with a return to the Bluegrass. USC EDGE Lorenzo Cowan will now be a Kentucky Wildcats after flipping his commitment from the Big Blue to the Trojans in the 2024 recruiting cycle.
The Big Ten transfer will move to the SEC with four years of eligibility remaining. KSR’s Transfer Bio Blast is taking a closer look at what defensive coordinator Brad White is adding to his position room at the Joe Craft Football Training Facility.
Former three-star recruit
Lorenzo Cowan was a three-star prospect in the 2024 high school recruiting. The Savannah (Ga.) Jenkins product was a multi-sport athlete in high school who played football, basketball, and participated in track. Jenkins played in Georgia’s AAAAA classification. That is the second-highest in the talent-rich state.
As a junior, Cowan recorded 31 tackles and eight sacks in 2022. That tape ultimately led to offers from West Virginia, Virginia Tech, and South Florida. The EDGE prospect would take official visits to West Virginia and South Florida in the summer before his senior year.
Flips from Kentucky to USC
As a senior, Lorenzo Cowan recorded 76 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, eight sacks, and eight pass breakups. The EDGE prospect became a true playmaker for Jenkins. During that senior year, Kentucky got Cowan on campus in September for an official visit.
A commitment followed.
Cowan decided to join his older brother, Tavion Gadson, at Kentucky. Gadson was a defensive line recruit in the 2023 cycle who committed to Florida State before flipping and signing with Kentucky. But things changed in December.
The Kentucky commit took an unexpected official visit trip to Los Angeles and quickly flipped to USC. Cowan spent one year with the Trojans and did not play a game before entering the transfer portal during spring practice.
Luckett’s scouting notebook
Lorenzo Cowan will be a redshirt freshman at Kentucky in 2025 with four years of eligibility remaining. The high school tape shows a bendy edge rusher who still needs to add some play strength.
Lorenzo Cowan (6-3, 247) was a tall and lean high school pass rusher in the Peach State. The outside linebacker prospect showed burst and bend off the edge as a rusher. The class of 2024 recorded 16 total sacks over his final two seasons of high school football. This is a player with a high-ceiling as a pass rusher. Motor ran hot as Cowan showed strain and effort. Flashed a willingness to embrace and play through contact as a run defender.
Cowan is a traits-heavy prospect who will need development. Adding play strength will be critical but the raw tools are there for this player to become a true edge pass rushing threat thanks to length, athleticism, and sudden burst. Projects to play Jack linebacker in Kentucky’s defensive scheme.
