Kentucky is continuing to evaluate the QB position.
Things were looking promising for the Kentucky Wildcats against Auburn as they started with a 10-0 lead and even got an interception to put more points on the board, but that never did happen.
Kentucky went on to lose 24-10 against Auburn. Midway through the game, the Cats decided to go in a different direction at quarterback, with Gavin Wimsatt replacing Brock Vandagriff and playing in the entire second half.
Many thought Wimsatt would just play one or two snaps in the first series, and then Vandagriff would return, but that didn’t happen. Wimsatt finished the night going 3/10, 34 passing yards, and one interception. Not ideal numbers at all, and at one point, Kentucky had a chance to score, but down at the goal line, Wimsatt threw a brutal interception, and the game was sealed after that.
Vandagriff’s stats weren’t that much better, going 9/17 for 120 yards and one interception.
On Monday, Kentucky offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan discussed what could determine who will be the starting quarterback in the future.
“We’re evaluating everything today,” Hamdan told the media. “We’re getting back with those guys and want to get face-to-face with them again. I know we’ve addressed it. It was something we were going to do in the game. We knew we were going to do that, so both quarterbacks were aware of it, and we’ll address that moving forward.”
Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops mentioned on Saturday after the Auburn game that the plan was for Wimsatt to start the third series, but that didn’t happen due to the offense playing great in the first quarter. The reasoning why Wimsatt had the chance to place is due to Hamdan wanting to see what he could do on the field.
“The decision to play (Wimsatt) last week was, as you guys know, to give him a chance at being in there the whole time and have the opportunity to have the whole playbook, if you will,” says Hamdan.
It may have been challenging for Vandagriff to not play at all in the second half, but Hamdan thought he handled it like a pro.
“The guy is everything you want. Everybody knows that about him. It was important for me to have that discussion with him before the game, so it wasn’t a surprise and ultimately, it was, ‘Whatever we got to do to win the game, I’m all in.’ There’s nobody more that exemplifies what this team is about than that guy,” Hamdan said.
“I very much know going through similar situations in my college career, how hard that is. He’s going to come back in the building, ready to get back to work and ready to do whatever it takes to go beat Tennessee.”
With the offense struggling, Hamdan is now looking to potentially try out new quarterbacks.
“We know exactly where we’re at right now, and we’re not going to just sit there and do the same thing over and over again and expect different results,” says Hamdan.
With gameday here, Kentucky still hasn’t announced who the starter will be tonight or if both quarterbacks will play in Knoxville. So, we’re asking the fans who ‘should’ start tonight. Sound off below!
