Xavier University President Colleen Hanycz condemned Bob Huggins for twice using an anti-gay slur during a Cincinnati radio interview.
The West Virginia men’s basketball coach called Xavier fans “Catholic f–s” while discussing the school’s rivalry with Cincinnati, where he used to coach. On Wednesday, per The Cincinnati Enquirer‘s Madeline Mitchell, Hanycz chastised the remarks
“The deplorable mischaracterizations and homophobic slurs directed towards our LGBTQ+ and our Catholic communities were repulsive and offensive,” Hanycz said. “To those in our Xavier family who were directly targeted and harmed by these hateful words, be assured that you are invaluable members of our Xavier family, and you belong here. Your presence makes us better.”

On Tuesday, Xavier released a statement from Hanycz espousing the university’s mission to “educate each student intellectually, morally, and spiritually.” However, the statement didn’t denounce Huggins’ hateful remarks.
In an apology posted on Twitter, Huggins vowed to make a donation to Xavier’s Center for Faith and Justice and Center for Diversity and Inclusion.
Huggins is expected to remain West Virginia’s head coach next season but will receive a suspension and $1 million salary reduction. He’ll reportedly also be required to attend sensitivity training.
