The Cincinnati Reds got their offseason moves started this afternoon. The club has designated for assignment and outrighted pitcher Tejay Antone as well as position players Austin Wynns, Ty France and Nick Martini. All four players cleared waivers and thus were outrighted to the minor leagues. Pitcher Christian Roa was also designated for assignment, but he was claimed on waivers by the Miami Marlins.
Tejay Antone, who is attempting to return after a third Tommy John surgery, accepted his outright to the minor leagues. Ty France and Nick Martini both elected to become free agents. It appears that Austin Wynns has not given the club his decision yet on whether or not he would accept his assignment.
While it seemed likely that the Reds would not keep Ty France around at his projected $8,000,000 arbitration number for 2025, they made that official today. He and Nick Martini will now both see what else is out there for them this offseason and if better opportunities are there.
For Tejay Antone, accepting his outright makes plenty of sense. As he recovers from his injury, his market is likely going to be incredibly limited. No one is likely to offer him more money than anyone else is on the free agent market. And he’s very familiar with the Reds organization and how they work with their rehab program. It would seem that he’s comfortable with all of that and so choosing to continue with them makes a bunch of sense.
Christian Roa was called up on August 19th by the Reds, but he was immediately placed on the 60-day injured list. He had been on the injured list in Triple-A for a week prior with a shoulder sprain. Cincinnati needed a 40-man roster spot, though, so rather than designate someone for assignment and risk losing them on waivers, they simply called Roa up and moved him to the 60-day injured list (minor league players are not eligible for this, hence why he had to be called up first).
Roa, the Reds 2nd round draft pick in 2020, spent his entire season on the mound with Louisville where he posted a 5.55 ERA. He made four starts and 19 relief appearances where he threw 48.2 innings while giving up 55 hits and walking 30 batters to go along with 47 strikeouts. He will turn 26 the first week of April.
With all of these roster moves, the Reds current 40-man roster is at 39 players. It will likely shrink again in the next few days as the team and or players with options will make their decisions and have a few of them become free agents.
