The Cincinnati Reds are bringing back catcher Austin Wynns and utility man Levi Jordan for 2025. Both men saw time in Cincinnati during the 2024 season, but also spent time in Triple-A.
Austin Wynns initially signed with Cincinnati in December of 2023 on a big league deal, but was designated for assignment a little more than two weeks later. He cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A, but got an invite to big league spring training two days later. Wynns spent the year between Louisville and Cincinnati, playing in 38 total games through July before he wound up on the injured list at the end of the month with a right teres major tear that would cost him the remainder of the 2024 season.
Following the season the Reds designated him for assignment. He once again cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville. Rather than accept the assignment, Wynns opted to become a free agent. He’s now back with the organization on a minor league deal. The transaction wire does not include an invitation to spring training as a non-roster player, but of the few minor league signings that Cincinnati has made this offseason, none have had that listed. The Reds have not announced any of their non-roster invites to spring training yet, though, and it seems very unlikely that Wynns would not be getting one as a 34-year-old catcher who saw big league time with the club last summer.
Known more for his defense, Wynns hit well for Cincinnati when he as asked to. Of course he only played in seven games with the Reds at the Major League level, but he went 7-19 (.368) with four doubles. In Louisville with the Bats he played in another 31 games and hit .250/.307/.404 with four doubles and four home runs.
After the team lost most of their catching depth to free agency after 2024 ended, Austin Wynns returning helps them add another option in the minors if an injury were to pop up to either Tyler Stephenson or Jose Trevino and the big league club required someone to step in.
The team is also bringing back Levi Jordan on a minor league deal. Like Wynns, he spent time in Triple-A and MLB with the Reds in 2024. His time with Cincinnati this season was his first experience in the big leagues and he made his debut on June 24th against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He went 1-3 with a double and an RBI that day. He spent the next week with the club, going 0-7 in six games before he was sent back to Triple-A.
With Louisville last year he played well. In his 95 games he hit .307/.382/.489 for the Bats with 23 doubles, a triple, 13 home runs, and he stole 10 bases. Defensively he showed that he could play just about everywhere. He saw game action at second base, third base, center field, left field, and right field during the year. A majority of that time came at second base but he was more than capable of filling in where asked.
The original article only spoke of the Austin Wynns signing, but Levi Jordan’s signing came up shortly after and has been added.
