The Cincinnati Reds continued their minor league signings, this time by bringing back corner infielder Edwin Rios on a deal for 2025. He spent the 2024 season with the organization and played in five games with the Reds in the week before the All-Star break where he went 1-9 with a walk.
The rest of the season was spent in Triple-A with Louisville. The 30-year-old was the best hitter in the farm system in 2024. He played in 99 games for the Bats and hit .286/.385/.547. His 28 doubles, 22 home runs, .286 average, and .385 on-base percentage were all 2nd best in the farm system. His .547 slugging percentage and .932 OPS both led the farm system. He also led the International League with his .932 OPS and was 2nd in the league in homers.
The 2024 season was his 6th season in a row he spent a part of the year in the big leagues. Back in 2020 he played for the Dodgers and got into games all three rounds of the playoffs for them as he and Los Angeles won the World Series.
While Cincinnati only played Edwin Rios at first base and third base in the 2024 season, he has spent some time in the corner outfield spots in the minor leagues in recent years with the Dodgers organization. Rios will turn 31 in April, so this is likely more of a depth signing – just like it was a year ago when he was brought in. Every team needs those types of guys and Rios has been that kind of guy for multiple teams over the last few years.
As of the publication of this article there’s no reporting of Edwin Rios being invited to big league camp. His signing showed up on the transaction wire simply as “signed a minor league deal”. Sometimes when deals like this are signed it will later be announced that it did come with an invite to big league camp.
