It was a good night out in Arizona for three of the Cincinnati Reds hitters. Matt McLain had two home runs for Glendale, going 2-5 with four runs batted in on the night. McLain, who has been seeing time in center field during his time out in the Arizona Fall League, started this game at second base. His brother Sean is also on Glendale’s team and started the game at third base, just in case you like fun stuff like that.
You can watch both home runs below – but be sure to watch the center fielder on the second home run…..
It wasn’t just McLain that had a multi-hit game among the Reds players, though. Edwin Arroyo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand both had 2-hit games, too. Arroyo was on base for both of McLain’s homers, stole two bases on the day – giving him seven through 16 games – and he wound up scoring three runs on the night.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand missed three weeks from mid-October through early November. He had gone 7-14 in his first four games before sitting for three weeks. When he returned to the lineup last week he went 0-4, marking his first hitless game of the AFL season. On Monday evening he got back in the hit column with two singles and he even stole a base. He’s now 9-22 in his six games (.409). It’s a small sample size, but it’s always more fun to see a guy picking up hits left and right than to see them struggle when they are returning from an injury.
This is the final week of the Arizona Fall League schedule. There are there games remaining in the regular season. The playoffs will begin on Friday and the championship game will be on Saturday. There are six teams in the league and three make the playoffs, which are just single-game “rounds”. The team with the best record automatically gets into the championship game on Saturday, with the other two teams playing on Friday night for the opportunity to face off against them.
This article was updated to correct the playoff format.
