The Cincinnati Reds announced on Saturday that they were sending outfielder Nick Martini to Triple-A Louisville on a rehab assignment. After injuring his thumb in early July he underwent surgery and hadn’t played in over two months. In that first game back with Louisville he went 1-4 with a walk and a run scored. On Sunday he did a bit better. The outfielder crushed two home runs and drove in four during the Bats 17-10 win over Iowa.
When he’s going right, Nick Martini’s got plenty of pop in his bat. We saw that in 2023 when he hit six home runs in 29 games with the Reds and another 15 in Triple-A Louisville in 93 games.
Things didn’t go as well this season with Cincinnati as he hit just five home runs in 146 at-bats before landing on the injured list. He has shown some power in Triple-A, though. In limited action, including his time rehabbing with Louisville this weekend, he’s hit .333/.451/.719 with six home runs in 57 at-bats.
There’s not much time left in the season. Louisville has Monday off and when they return to the field on Tuesday the Bats will only have six games left in the season. The Reds don’t have many more than that. They also have Monday off before returning for a 6-game homestand. The season will come to an end the week after that with a 5-game road trip.
Ian Gibaut makes 1st appearance
The Reds also sent Ian Gibaut out on a rehab assignment this weekend. He pitched for Louisville on Sunday afternoon. He would give up two hits – one of them was a solo home run – in his inning of work. Gibaut threw 19 pitches with 13 strikes. His fastball averaged 93.8 MPH on the day. In 2023 he averaged 95.2 MPH. It’s unclear if he will be able to return to pitch for the Reds this season or not given the amount of time remaining in the season.
