Last night, shortly after the New York Mets came from behind in the 9th inning to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers and advance in the playoffs, it was reported that the Cincinnati Reds were hiring Terry Francona to be their next manager. This morning it was made official. Francona signed a 3-year contract to be the Reds manager through 2027. His deal also includes an option year for 2028.
With 1950 wins under his belt as a manager and two World Series titles to his name, Terry Francona is the biggest “name” that’s been leading the Cincinnati Reds in a long time. Dusty Baker had a similar resume when he came to Cincinnati, but without the two championships.
When Francona retired following the 2023 season in Cleveland, the Guardians had a losing season in two of his final three years. The 76-86 record he had in 2023 was the worst record he had as a manager in the previous 19 seasons, going back to his days with the Philadelphia Phillies.
