The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a three-year, $15 million contract extension with catcher Jose Trevino, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. After an injury to Tyler Stephenson in spring training, the newly extended Trevino will serve as the team’s starter until Stephenson returns.
Trevino, who the Reds acquired from the New York Yankees in December in exchange for Fernando Cruz, will now be a mainstay in Cincinnati for the near future. Trevino was already under contract for the 2025 season at $3.4 million, and the extension will keep him with the club until 2027, with a club option for him to return for the 2028 season.

Report: Jose Trevino Inks Three-Year Extension with Reds
When the Yankees acquired Trevino before the 2022 season, he was brought in as a defensive specialist to pair with Kyle Higashioka. In his first year with the club, Trevino had a breakout season, earning his first All-Star nod and becoming the first American League catcher to earn Platinum Glove honors.
Trevino is coming off a down year where he hit .215 with 8 home runs and 28 RBI, losing the starting catching job to Austin Wells in the process. Known to be a defense-first catcher, Trevino still brings elite plate discipline and solid bat-to-ball skills and could slot into the bottom of the Reds lineup.
The Reds are also hoping Trevino can bring his defensive prowess to help what could be one of the better rotations in the National League in 2025. The former Platinum Glove winner is among the league’s best in fielding run value and blocks above average, but he is one of the league’s worst catchers when it comes to throwing runners out. Headlined by Hunter Greene and newcomer Brady Singer and filled out by youngsters Andrew Abbott, Nick Lodolo, and Rhett Lowder, Trevino’s elite defense and framing metrics could help elevate this rotation in a year where the NL Central has no clear favorite.
Trevino will serve as the team’s starting catcher as Tyler Stephenson recovers from a low-grade internal left oblique strain suffered in spring training. Backing up Trevino will more than likely be Triple-A catcher Austin Wynns, who saw brief time with the big league club in 2024.
