Sunday night saw the 2025 Spring Breakout series come to an end. The Cincinnati Reds prospects topped the Milwaukee Brewers 9-7 at American Family Fields of Phoenix on MLB Network in a game that featured a lot of scoring early on before the bullpen for both teams settled in and slowed the contest down.
Cincinnati had eight hits on the day to go along with nine walks. The only player in the game with multiple hits was Sal Stewart. The Reds #7 rated prospect has been impressive in big league came with the Reds and he continued that on Sunday night in the prospect showcase series, going 2-5 with a triple and driving in three runs.
Stewart’s triple was just one of three in the game for Cincinnati’s prospects. Shortstop Edwin Arroyo had one, finishing the night by going 1-2 with a walk, run, and an RBI. Outfielder Ethan O’Donnell also had one, finishing his night 1-2 with a walk, two runs, and two RBI.
Infielder Leo Balcazar started the game at second base in this one and he went 1-1 with two runs batted in, two runs scored, and two walks. A well regarded prospect after crushing the ball in both the Dominican Summer League and Arizona Complex League he was out to a great start in Daytona in 2023 before tearing his ACL in a freak accident play in late April of that season. When he returned to the field in 2024 he struggled in a big way in Dayton and just didn’t quite look the same. Perhaps he can get back on track in 2025.
Outfielder Hector Rodriguez started the game in right field and picked up a double and a walk and also scored a run. Cincinnati stuck with their starters for quite a while before going to the bench players. Arnaldo Lantigua, who was acquired in a trade over the offseason with the Dodgers, was the only bench guy to get a hit for the Reds as he singled in his only at-bat of the game.
The pitching during the game was not great for either team. After five innings it was 9-7 and only two half-innings went without at least one run. The bullpen for both teams were able to keep the game there for the final four innings. Carson Rudd and Cole Schoenwetter each tossed a shutout inning in the 6th and 7th while working around two baserunners.
When the 8th inning began the Reds turned the game over to Luis Mey and he looked outstanding in his perfect inning. He struck out two batters in the inning, with his final strikeout featuring a shattered bat and a 102 MPH strike three to end the inning. Zach Maxwell then came out for the 9th and sealed the win by matching what Mey did, throwing a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
